ACLS Initial Provider Course

Overview:

The ACLS Initial Provider Course is designed for healthcare professionals who manage or respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies and require American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification. This in-person course emphasizes early recognition and management of respiratory and cardiac arrest, effective team dynamics, and evidence-based resuscitation practices in accordance with the 2025 AHA Guidelines.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, students will be able to: 

  • Recognize and manage cardiac arrest, acute arrhythmias, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes

  • Apply ACLS algorithms in high-stress emergency situations

  • Demonstrate effective airway management and pharmacologic interventions

  • Perform high-quality CPR as part of a coordinated resuscitation team

  • Apply systematic approaches to patient assessment and post–cardiac arrest care

  • Demonstrate effective team leadership and communication during resuscitation

Course Structure

This course includes a combination of:

 

Didactic Instruction

  • ACLS algorithms and clinical decision-making

  • ECG rhythm recognition and interpretation

  • Pharmacology and advanced airway management

  • Team dynamics and communication

 

Hands-On Training

  • Megacode scenarios

  • High-fidelity cardiac arrest simulations

  • Team-based resuscitation practice

  • Skills testing and performance evaluation

 

This combined format ensures students gain the knowledge, physical skills, and real-world exposure needed for safe entry-level practice.

Course Materials

Applicants must:

  • Participants must use the 2025 AHA ACLS Provider Manual

  • Books may be purchased at shopcpr.heart.org or borrowed from your department

  • A completed ACLS online pretest must be brought to class

  • Renewal students must score 80% or higher on the exam

  • A current, unexpired ACLS card is required for renewal students

  • Expired cards require enrollment in the Initial Provider course

Attendance Policy

  • Participants unable to attend must notify the training center at (440) 354-1284 prior to class.

  • Please leave your name, department, and reason for absence.

  • No-shows will be reported to the participant’s manager.

  • Classes may be cancelled if fewer than three (3) students are enrolled.

Certification

  • Upon successful completion, participants will receive an American Heart Association ACLS Provider eCard.

  • There is no card fee for UH caregivers.

Cost:

  • UH Lake Caregivers: No cost

  • External Participants: $220
