Lifesaving Skills for Medical Professionals

Overview:

The program prepares students to function as an integral part of a comprehensive EMS response system under medical oversight.

The course follows the Ohio Department of Public Safety – Division of EMS (ODPS-EMS) requirements and prepares students to perform advanced interventions using the equipment and medications typically found on an ambulance. Graduates serve as a critical link between the scene of injury or illness and the emergency health care system.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and provide advanced-level interventions for trauma, cardiac, respiratory, medical, and special population emergencies.

  • Demonstrate competency in advanced airway management, vascular access, medication administration, cardiac monitoring, and other AEMT-level skills in accordance with state scope of practice.

  • Integrate advanced clinical decision-making, communication, teamwork, and professionalism while operating under medical direction within the EMS system.

  • Safely and effectively manage patient care and transport using both basic and advanced EMS equipment in pre-hospital environments.

  • Meet all competency and hour requirements for state AEMT certification eligibility and the National Registry examination process.

Course Structure

This program meets or exceeds Ohio’s Advanced EMT certification curriculum and includes:

 

Didactic Instruction 

  • Advanced anatomy and physiology

  • Advanced patient assessment

  • Pharmacology and medication administration

  • Advanced airway and ventilation management

  • Cardiac and respiratory emergencies

  • Medical and trauma emergencies

  • Special populations and complex patient care

  • EMS operations, safety, and legal/ethical responsibilities

 

Hands-On Training 

  • Advanced skills labs

  • High-fidelity simulation scenarios

  • Scenario-based decision-making and team-based care modules

 

Clinical & Field Experience

  • Supervised emergency department clinical rotations

  • Advanced life support EMS agency ride-alongs

  • Skills verification and psychomotor competency evaluations

 

This combined instructional format ensures students develop advanced clinical skills, sound judgment, and real-world experience necessary for safe and effective AEMT-level practice.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.

  • Hold current Ohio EMT certification in good standing.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license or equivalent government-issued identification.

  • Complete all required health clearances, including immunizations (TB, tetanus, MMR, Hepatitis B), and any required drug screening or background checks.

  • Hold current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.

  • Submit all required paperwork, clinical documentation, and fees prior to the course start date.

Certification Eligibility

Upon successful completion of all didactic hours, clinical/field rotations, skills testing, and final examinations, students will be eligible to:

  • Sit for the NREMT Advanced EMT cognitive and psychomotor examinations

  • Apply for Ohio Advanced EMT certification through the Ohio EMS Board

  • Function as an AEMT within EMS agencies under medical oversight

Career Pathways

Graduates are prepared for Advanced EMT positions in:

​

  • Advanced Life Support ambulance services

  • Fire departments

  • Hospital-based EMS and emergency departments

  • Industrial and corporate medical teams

  • Specialty transport and rescue agencies

 

This certification also provides a strong foundation for continued advancement into Paramedic education programs.
