Paramedic Anatomy & Physiology Prerequisite

Overview:
The Paramedic Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) Prerequisite course provides the essential biomedical foundation required for admission into the University Hospitals EMS Institute Paramedic Program.
Designed specifically for future paramedics, this accelerated course bridges the gap between EMT-level knowledge and the advanced medical understanding needed for paramedic education. Students learn the structure and function of major body systems, physiologic processes, and how the human body responds to illness and injury.
Successful completion with a score of 80% or higher is required to advance into the Paramedic Program.
Textbook: Using Memmler’s Structure and Function of the Human Body as the primary text.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

Describe the organization, structure, and function of major human body systems.

Explain physiologic regulation, homeostasis, and the effects of illness and injury on normal function.

Apply foundational terminology, chemistry, cellular biology, and tissue concepts to clinical scenarios.

Demonstrate readiness for advanced coursework in cardiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and trauma management within the Paramedic Program.

Meet the academic eligibility requirement for entry into the UH EMS Institute Paramedic Program with a minimum score of 80% or higher.
Course Structure
This accelerated prerequisite course includes:

Instructor-led lectures covering 21 chapters in a system-based approach.

Weekly assigned readings, chapter objectives, and medical terminology exercises.

Quizzes, objective notebook assignments, and terminology assessments aligned with each chapter.

Midterm and final written examinations assessing cumulative understanding of core content.

Journal article analysis and presentation to support academic literacy and real-world application.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must:

Hold current Ohio EMT certification.

Demonstrate the ability to manage the academic pace and assignment requirements of an accelerated course.

Submit all required paperwork and fees prior to the course start date.

Students must achieve a score of 80% or higher to meet the prerequisite requirement for Paramedic Program admission.
