Lifesaving Skills for Medical Professionals 

BLS Initial Provider Course

Overview:

The BLS Initial Provider Course is designed for healthcare professionals who are new to CPR training, have an expired BLS card, or prefer a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience. This American Heart Association–approved course provides the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize life-threatening emergencies, perform high-quality CPR, use an AED, and work effectively as part of a resuscitation team.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, students will be able to: 

  • Recognize cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and choking emergencies

  • Perform high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants

  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) safely and effectively

  • Demonstrate proper airway management and ventilation techniques

  • Work effectively as part of a resuscitation team

  • Apply current AHA guidelines in clinical and prehospital environments

Course Structure

This course includes a combination of:

 

Didactic Instruction

  • Cardiac and respiratory arrest recognition

  • Chain of Survival and early intervention

  • Team-based resuscitation concepts

 

Hands-On Training

  • CPR and AED skills practice

  • Airway management techniques

  • Scenario-based performance testing

 

This combined format ensures students gain the knowledge, physical skills, and real-world exposure needed for safe entry-level practice.

Course Materials

Applicants must:

  • Have access to the 2025 AHA BLS Provider Manual.

  • Books may be purchased at shopcpr.heart.org or borrowed from your department or educator.

Attendance Policy

  • Participants unable to attend must notify the training center at (440) 354-1284 prior to class.

  • Please leave your name, department, and reason for absence.

  • No-shows will be reported to the participant’s manager.

  • Classes may be cancelled if fewer than three (3) students are enrolled.

Certification

  • Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an American Heart Association BLS Provider eCard.

  • There is no card fee for UH caregivers.

UH Lake EMS Registration

  • UH Caregivers: No cost

  • External Participants: $65

  • Card Cost: $10
