Heartsaver First Aid & Stop The Bleed

Overview:
The Heartsaver First Aid & Stop the Bleed course is an in-person training designed for community members and non-medical professionals who want to be prepared to respond to medical emergencies and life-threatening bleeding. Developed by the American Heart Association, this course provides practical, hands-on instruction in basic first aid and bleeding control techniques that can be used until professional help arrives.
Training is delivered through video-based instruction and hands-on practice led by certified instructors, supporting University Hospitals’ mission of Building Lifesaving Communities.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Recognize and respond appropriately to common medical emergencies and injuries.

Provide first aid for conditions such as bleeding, burns, fractures, allergic reactions, and sudden illness.

Control life-threatening bleeding using direct pressure, wound packing, and tourniquet application.

Activate emergency response systems and provide care until advanced medical services arrive.

Demonstrate confidence and preparedness during emergency situations.
Course Structure
This course follows the American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid & Stop the Bleed curriculum and includes:
Didactic Instruction

Bleeding control and hemorrhage management

Emergency action steps and scene safety
Hands-On Training

Instructor-led skills practice

Bleeding control techniques, including tourniquet use

Real-time feedback and coaching from certified instructors
Certification
Upon successful completion, participants will receive:

An official American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid course completion card

Stop the Bleed training acknowledgment

Cost:
There is no cost for this course.
Training is provided through University Hospitals Community Benefit as part of its mission to build safer, more prepared communities.
