Hybrid EMT Initial Course

Overview:

This hybrid program combines online didactic instruction with in-person skills labs, high-fidelity simulation, and supervised clinical and field experiences.

The course follows the Ohio Department of Public Safety – Division of EMS (ODPS-EMS) curriculum requirements and aligns with National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) standards, preparing students for both the cognitive and psychomotor certification examinations.

Schedule & Format:

This hybrid program includes asynchronous online coursework, scheduled Zoom sessions, and mandatory in-person labs. Specific course dates, days, and times are listed on the registration page for each offering.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and deliver appropriate care across a wide range of emergency situations, including trauma, cardiac, respiratory, medical, and obstetric/pediatric emergencies.

  • Demonstrate competency in core EMT skills such as airway and breathing management, hemorrhage and shock control, basic life support interventions, and safe patient handling.

  • Apply critical thinking, decision-making, communication, teamwork, professionalism, and ethical principles in pre-hospital and clinical EMS environments.

  • Meet all educational, skills, and experiential requirements necessary for eligibility to test for Ohio EMT certification and National Registry exams.

  • Integrate online coursework with in-person training to build critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and professionalism in EMS settings.

Course Structure

This program meets or exceeds Ohio’s EMT initial certification requirements and includes:

 

Didactic Instruction (Online)

  • Anatomy & physiology

  • EMS systems and communications

  • Patient assessment

  • Medical and trauma emergencies

  • Cardiac, respiratory, pediatric, and obstetric care

  • EMS operations, safety, and legal/ethical responsibilities

 

Hands-On Training (In Person)

  • Interactive skills labs

  • High-fidelity simulation scenarios

  • Realistic decision-making and teamwork modules

  • Mandatory Zoom sessions and scheduled in-person labs ensure blended learning accountability.

 

Clinical & Field Experience

  • Supervised emergency department clinical rotations

  • EMS agency ride-alongs to meet the required patient contact hours

  • Skills verification and psychomotor competency checks

  • This format supports adult learners, career changers, and traditional students balancing work, school, or family commitments.

 

This hybrid format ensures students gain the flexibility of online learning while developing the hands-on skills and real-world experience required for safe, entry-level EMT practice.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be 17 years old and a current high school senior.

  • Have a valid driver’s license or equivalent ID.

  • Meet any agency or clinical site affiliation requirements.

  • Complete required health clearance, including immunizations (TB, tetanus, MMR, Hepatitis B), and any criminal history statement or drug screening as required by clinical partners.

  • Submit all required paperwork, clinical documentation, and fees before the course start date.

Certification Eligibility

Upon successful completion of all didactic hours, clinical/field rotations, skills testing, and final examinations, students will be eligible to:

  • Sit for the NREMT cognitive and psychomotor exams

  • Apply for Ohio EMT certification through the Ohio EMS Board

  • Transition directly into employment with EMS agencies, fire departments, hospitals, or industrial rescue teams

Career Pathways

Graduates are prepared for entry-level EMT positions in:

  • Ambulance services

  • Fire departments

  • Hospital emergency departments

  • Industrial and corporate medical teams

  • Rescue/transport agencies
     

This certification also provides a strong foundation for further advancement into Advanced EMT (AEMT) or Paramedic programs.

​Certified EMTs play a vital role in the pre-hospital emergency care system, providing assessment, stabilization, and transport across a spectrum of emergencies. Employment opportunities exist in public and private sectors.
